Do you know what kangaroo food consists of? Most people are quite fascinating by this animal that is a native of Australia. Yet they don’t know very much about it such as what it likes to eat. As you continue to read though you will find out what they depend on to survive. They are herbivores which means they are only going to eat grass and plants.
The majority of kangaroo food is in the form of grass – it can be green and luscious or brown and dry. Either way they are going to consume a vast amount of it. Young shoots and leaves are excellent food sources for them. During certain times of the year they may find fruits and berries growing on plants and trees. They will bypass grass and other food sources to get to these delicious alternatives when they have the opportunity to do so.
You will find that the kangaroo mainly hunts for food in the early morning hours and towards the sunset. The climate where the live is extremely warm so during the day they are resting in shades areas where they can stay cool. They are excellent swimmers, so in addition to using the water to cool off they also swim in order to get to other areas of land to find food.
When it comes to finding kangaroo food, they will move around in a large area to find it. While they do have a home range, the span of their area to search for food can consist of many miles. If food is hard to find, they will continue to spread out further and further in search of it. Since the kangaroo is highly adaptable to various environments they are able to survive as long as they can find enough food out there.
It may seem like the kangaroo takes a very long time to consume their food. They tend to be very curious about what is going on around them while they are chewing food. They have more than one stomach and a very unique digestive system. After they have swallowed food, they regurgitate it.
Then they will chew it again and swallow it again. Only at that point will it be processed by the second stomach and used for energy by the body. Cows have this same process of creating cud as part of their complex digestive system.
In addition to kangaroo food, they do need to consume some water. However, a great deal of the foods they eat have enough in it for them to be satisfied. They only actively seek out water to drink three or four times per year. Since it is so rare many people have the misconception that the kangaroo doesn’t drink water at all.
The amount of kangaroo food that is out there influences more than the size of these animals though. They are programmed to only reproduce when conditions are right. If there is a drought and very little food offered, they won’t mate and no offspring will be born. This will continue until there is enough food again and the kangaroos feel that their basic needs are being met.
This is why in some areas where the kangaroo lives, their population continues to plummet. Experts worry that without adequate foods sources there they will all eventually die out. They aren’t reproducing at a rate fast enough to sustain it. As a result various conservation plans are in place. The objective of them is to prevent the clearing of lands that offer kangaroo food sources for them to live on.
